How PngExport compresses images in your browser
The image is processed on your device with a browser worker. The output type follows the source and your transparency choice, then the tool checks the actual result.

Read the source locally
Your image is opened in the browser. It is not sent to an image-compression server.

Apply relevant settings
The compressor reads the dimensions preference and shows a transparency toggle only for PNG, WebP, and BMP.

Create a compressed copy
A browser worker re-encodes the image. If scaling is allowed and the first pass is not smaller, it tries a fallback pass.

Compare, then offer download
The result is checked against the source file. A download is offered only when the output is smaller.
JPEG compression is lossy; PNG remains PNG when transparency is preserved. Actual size savings and visual changes depend on the source image and selected settings.

GIF, animated WebP, TIFF, AVIF, and SVG are not accepted here. SVG files stay vector when you use the dedicated SVG compressor.

Which image formats can I compress here?
This tool accepts JPEG/JPG, PNG, WebP, and BMP images. Support also depends on your browser being able to decode the selected file.
Can I compress SVG files here?
SVG is a vector format rather than a raster image. Use the SVG compressor to clean supported SVG markup without converting the artwork to pixels.
Does the tool preserve transparent backgrounds?
For PNG, WebP, and BMP sources, Preserve Transparency is available and enabled by default. BMP is exported as PNG when transparency is preserved. Turning the option off creates JPEG output, which does not support transparency.
Will my image keep its original dimensions?
Keep Original Dimensions is enabled by default. Turn it off to allow resolution scaling during compression. The resulting file size is displayed before download.
Will every compressed image be smaller?
Not always. Some source files are already efficiently encoded. The tool checks the processed file and does not present an equal-size or larger result as a saving.
Are my images uploaded to a server?
The image compression runs in your browser using a browser worker. The selected image is processed on your device rather than uploaded to a compression server.
Does this tool compress GIF, TIFF, or AVIF?
No. This compressor currently supports JPEG/JPG, PNG, WebP, and BMP still images. GIF animation, animated WebP, TIFF, and AVIF are not supported here. For SVG files, use the separate SVG compressor.
